We listened to the audio book weeks before to get her out of the Disney story and into the true story of how things are. The biggest lesson learned -- Tinkerbell has a foul mouth. Haha...she did in the production as well even though you don't see her. We didn't have to watch the Disney animated movie but we did watch the other Peter Pan movie.

Riley of course got a crazy idea that mom could make her into Tiger Lily for the night of the show. I dug through the closet and found a brown sweatshirt in Michael's closet that was too big. I cut the thing up and stitched together a fitted, Indian Princess dress. I even hand beaded the thing.

This layout you can't see her cute little dress but you do see two of the photos I shot. I had taken the photos on my Mark III but transferred them to my phone and used three different apps with various effects on the images. I then transferred them back in and used a grungy overlay on top of the photos...just around the edges. The same overlay is on the background sheet, photo mats and pictures. The beads and feathers were the same as on her costume. The red feathers were plucked from one of her Tahitian costumes off the hip belt. I added the Prima flowers only for dimension sake and I had yet to use any of them on layouts since purchasing them wholesale so many years ago. One of these days I will finally make a dent in my stash. was an amazingly quick and easy layout to complete. The paper is from My Little Shoebox.

Font downloaded from Dafont.com which was listed as the original Peter Pan font.
Honestly, my first thought was if I even had any in my enormous stash. Well low and behold...haha if you only knew how much paper there actually is...I had 6" paper packs from Pink Paislee from warehouse packs I had purchased a while back.

I first had to put together a color scheme. These days I rarely ever start off with a photo I want to scrap. That is generally my last concern. It's the opposite of where I started. I think it comes from wanting to stash bust and more about the creative process. If I start with a photo already printed out, it would give me a bit of a block.

My main staples are My Mind's Eye cardstock. Back in 2008, I went to a retreat in Utah and MME was there. They also had a warehouse sale for us. I still have a lot of the paper because well... it was that cheap! So I inked the edges of the green paper with distress ink. Then I softened the look of the ink by applying Pan Pastels further into the base to create a vignette. That really is one of my favorite things to do in Lightroom, Photoshop or any app...to highlight Riley in photos. A few SEI brads and Melody Ross GCD chipboard elements later, I was almost done. Oh yes I added rubons...those little stamps.

I selected the photos based on the colors. These were taken as we were leaving for school on the day of the walkathon. They had a dancing theme. Riley chose to be a Warbler (Glee). I found a blue blazer at Goodwill over a year and a half before this. I used inkjet twill to create the emblem. Red bias tape was sewn on and I changed out the buttons. The tie was made after she decided what she was going to dress up as before going to bed. Yes...I was there at 1am making a tie and doing the jacket.

Well visit the TrueXOXO blog and check out some of the other layouts. My houndstooth is small and somewhat blended in. There are some that really POP!
Each team member has created a layout for a specific month. I chose October since I had many opportunities to shoot photos of Riley.

I went really simple on this layout. I diecut the border from a printed piece of Halloween themed cardstock using the Pazzles. Then I sprayed adhesive on the entire frame and sprinkled Glitter Ritz on the entire piece. Although it has color, it is somewhat transparent. A few distressed rectangles later and some dew drops, I was done. Even though this layout is not in my usual over-embellishing style, it took me about the same amount of time creating this layout because of the glitter. It's a shame that glitter doesn't show well on a computer becasue just about every element sparkles.

By the way, I created the spider dress, headpiece and makeup Riley is wearing. What more could a girl want than a dress that is metallic purple!
I like to use every bit of fabric possible. This layout used 2-year old photos but as you know I do not scrap chronologically. Also I used up embellishments that have been hanging around for much longer.
At the True XOXO blog this month, we have 24 days full of Christmas inspiration. I created this layout to go with the costume I designed last year. If you have been trying to keep track of me, you know I haven't been creating too many layouts this year. Costumes, YES! Scrapbooking, NO!

For this layout I used a paper pack I got from Michael's. I have been anti-paper pack for some time but this one was so cute, I couldn't resist. I've found that the paper over the past say....four years or so, has pretty much looked the same. I guess that's why I have been getting bored with scrapbooking. The upside to this though is that I can use all the paper I already have without looking out of date.

The one step I wanted to touch on was to create your own spray paint. I have been collecting a lot of pump spray bottles from hair products. I put in a 50/50 fix of water and fluid acrylic paint, Cheap paint works best. I can't say that it would work with the same mixture if I were to use my Golden Brand paints. It's that easy. You just either have to wash out the bottles when done or only make colored spray paints in colors you want to use over and over. In this case, I made very little but I know white will be used again.

Riley wanted to be Isabella Shapiro Garcia from Phineas and Ferb for Halloween. I thought that the normal outfit for Isabella was going to make her difficult to figure out. Pink jumper, pink bow...so we made a deal. She would be Isabella as the Fireside Girls Leader.

I don't know how I managed to make everything without a pattern but I survived with little damage. So many people knew who she was...well at Disneyland of course for the Halloween Trick or Treat party. One group even said she looked just like her...face and all.

I spent hours at Joann's matching my photos of the Fireside Girl costume from Disneyland and actual printouts from the cartoon. Matching colors with the thought also on the weight of the fabrics so she wouldn't be cold at night. I did find that the costumes they have for the show in the California Adventure park were way off from the actual colors. But it did help a bit to see texture.

You can't see really her sash with the badges behind her Fireside Girls book I made with actual felt pages which were finished off with a serger. I used inkjet canvas to print the logo. The first page has the Fireside Girl song printed on the fabric as well.

I thought that the costume for sure needed to have something to show Phineas and Ferb. We headed to the Disney store and bought the characters. Funny story...the Easter Bunny brought the basket two years ago. It had a fabric insert. When we removed it, it had a sticker on the inside that said it was a Target item and made in China. Riley, in awe, says, "the Easter Bunny shops at Target too!" Well I guess he sure does. So I used the original insert to create the pattern. You can't see it so well but underneath Perry, there is a little yellow text. The front side says "Isabella" and the backside says "Fireside Girl." That of course all courtesy of my sister-in-law. To keep the characters up peeking over the side of the basket, I stitched in a pocket to hold them.

Anyhow, Phineas and Ferb were the last characters we saw that night. We were so excited! Mostly at the party, you will see the villains. They were hidden in the Innovations theater. And we only got a posed photo of Perry before taking off to bring out Phineas and Ferb 45 minutes before the park closed.

The shoes were about a year a half old. How they fit...who knows! They were canvas with a big bow on them and grey. I first used a red dye but it was more a tulip color than a warm red. I decided to use food coloring and sponge it on. Still...not quite there. Even with Riley telling me it was going to be nighttime and dark...I proceeded to fixate. I mixed acrylic paint, water and acrylic fabric medium to come to an exact red! When she took off her shoes that night, she had a blister and I thought it bled all over her foot. Nope it was dye that came right off with a bit of lotion.

We came home with over 20 pounds of candy collected by Riley. The night, obviously, a success.

The orange I could easily do without...as I have said before, it clashes with my skintone! Okay so here is my layout.

It all really started with the photo I was going to use. Generally I don't start this way but I had to figure out an image that I could use that I haven't scrapped before. Anyhow, next came the Making Memories frame. I of course reached for the closest solid cardstock which happened to be My Mind's Eye. I don't know when I will ever run out of MME cardstock from when I bought it during a trip to Utah for a retreat and they had a warehouse sale. I came home with over 50 pounds of new stuff but they even included free shipping for all of it and was under $75.

<div class="uiStreamMessage userContentWrapper" data-ft="{"type":1,"tn":"K"}">
<span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}">I
used quite a few products on this layout. I began with misting
punchinella. Then a few drips of India Ink blown around with the heat
gun. I thought it needed to be roughed up so I misted the entire sheet
with homemade mist that only contained sparkle. I crumpled the entire
thing and then I thought, "oh no!" Ironed the entire sheet and was back
on track. After playing with stamps, Distress Inks, Stazon, acrylic
inks, acrylic paints and PanPastels. I even added extra heavy gel medium
and molding paste to the pieces. I had Pink Paislee Halloween glitter
stickers that are brown which I laid down. And then I thought you would
think they were black. So I added a bit of corn starch to the stickers
which made them appear gray. At that point, I thought "oh no" again
because you would still think they were black. So I added silver acrylic
ink to the stickers applied with my fingers. I lightened them a bit
more with gray PanPastels. Other products used...of course bling, frame
and brad from Making Memories, bead end caps, lace, Pink Paislee
chipboard and wood letters, string of pearls, Creative Imaginations brad
and rubons.

<div class="uiStreamMessage userContentWrapper" data-ft="{"type":1,"tn":"K"}">

<div class="uiStreamMessage userContentWrapper" data-ft="{"type":1,"tn":"K"}">
<span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}">I was thinking yesterday that I really enjoy the process of making these "solid cardstock" type of layouts. I may be able to actually go forward never using a piece of patterned paper again. But don't hold me to it!

I thought I would bring you up to speed.

We have had favorite book character dress up day at school. . . .(pictured below was Riley's favorite from Monster High...Draculaura-- a close up on the face so you can see her fangs and they lasted all day even after having lunch.)
Little Willy Wonka for her vocal recital and first vocal competition (she took first place)...this was the best photo of her so you don't get to see the skirt but it is basically gold with the same lace ruffles and trim you see here. Oh but you do miss the spats I made too. Oh well.

Cheetah for The Lion King musical..and by the way it's the same Kryolan makeup I used for Draculaura and this stuff does not budge. You can wear it all day and it stays perfect with or without fixative. When I spray the fixative she gags so I try not to use it. Here in this photo, I had to rush her from Tahitian dance rehearsal to a performance and I dressed her, did the hair and makeup in under 15 minutes.

Check out one of the masks I casted for the musical as well...it's an exact replica of SCAR and it sits on the head just like the ones they use in the Broadway production. Here I was fixing up the mask after the actor did an intial paint job. I thought it needed some livening up. So I spray painted the hair and tried to cover up the gold duct tape he put on right before the show. I made a Simba and Mufasa mask/headpiece as well.

I think that autumn has to be my favorite season. Now one could say that we can wear the same clothes all year round here in San Francisco but I think it's more than just the clothes. It's the colors! I have to admit, I don't wear much green...or any orange or yellow at all (orange and yellow really clash with my skintone). So that being said, it doesn't mean that I can't play with them on canvas.

There are reasons I think I haven't scrapbooked much over the past year. One is that I felt a bit confined to the square of a layout or canvas. Maybe I wouldn't have noticed a difference if I hadn't started sewing. Fabric is so versatile. I can make it into just about anything and in any size. I may not be the best at sewing or follow directions but I can make it hold together just the same and no one knows it. Being self taught....I am okay with this.

Recently I have gotten back into mixed media to ease myself into holiday teacher gifts. With the same methodology, it doesn't have to be perfect and no one knows the difference. Here are peeks at my most recent fall creations.

Above, I used Dollar Tree synthetic leaves for the majority of my background texture. I love the bubbling of glue and paint when hit with a heat gun. So I figured I would heat the edges of the leaves...and they looked even better after they curled. There is a ton of texture on this canvas. The cardstock was flocked and gave it a great look.
This was the first owl canvas I had created. I got a Paper Smooches wood grain stamp last week. It has deeply etched edges and no texture in between which allows for great stamped images on any cardstock. Well, I used it on molding paste. Okay not really. I pressed the stamp into molding paste. I will suggest that if you do the same, rinse off the stamp under warm water before pressing into the paste a second time. I got a lot of paste stuck in the stamp and the image didn't come out clear on the second stamping because it was all clogged up (see the open space?). Now I should have placed the own on the other side but I liked how I tied the gingham ribbon. So it was too bad, so sad.

I hope I have given you the inspiration to create mixed media art work inspired by fall
So much has been going on. My little girl started dancing in competitions. She placed third in her first Tahitian (solo) dance competition in late April. There were a few other competitions that her group won. She also sang her first vocal competition and placed first.

The Tahitian group (well one of her groups) was training 5 days/week. Summer wasn't a time to let up. We actually took a 10 day trip to Tahiti. Not only did they dance there but Riley took first place in the competition. I think it says a lot about being able to come in first dancing in the country where the dance originated.

Anyhow, this brings me to my first non-sewing project in almost a year. It is a canvas based on the "Keep calm and carry on" posters. With Tahitian dance, it is all freestyle in competitions. The house dryers play beats and you have to know what steps go with the particular music right away. A "fa'arapu" is the fast circular hip movement and is the main step they judge dancers on. Oh I bet you are even wondering what Tahitian dance is.

You know when you think of hula girls in coconut bras and grass skirts...well that really is Tahitian dance.

Anyhow, I covered the entire canvas with matte gel medium which didn't turn out the way I hoped. My medium is really old. And it gave the piece more of a bees wax appearance. Instead of redoing everything or trashing the canvas, I stuck it out and went with the flow. Well, I hope to be back soon with more projects.

Plus I've had some tooth pain for the past two weeks so I am trying to bounce back. I do have two True XOXO layouts for you today. The first was completed for a "leap" challenge. It's a combination of Prima, Making Memories and GCD Studios. It was an out of focus photo of Riley doing a jete in rehearsal. The original photo of the layout is stored on another system so it's a saved file from FB. Even more out of focus now. If only you could see her face in the image.
I can't say I am thrilled with this layout. It wasn't what I intended. Riley and I are taking a Teresa McFadden writing class learning how to make whimsical lettering. I have awesome block hand writing but I am not fond of my own hand writing in general. It's great for note taking and for people to read but nothing decorative. This month's challenge was really to create a layout inspired by Pinterest. My inspiration came from the quote, "I hope you always find a reason to smile." Last month, I had her two front teeth pulled. So she's toof-less in the photo if you can't tell. Those two teeth were loose since...gees before Halloween. So it was their time to go.

I recently created a tote bag for a serger class. Hopefully I will feel well enough to post an image of my fabric painting creation on this tote.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009371469007231667noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1310078778320011075.post-22023428203482975212012-02-01T10:18:00.000-08:002012-02-01T10:18:25.136-08:00Let's get messy in February!

The True Xoxo challenge is up for February. I will walk you through my messy layout. I tried to do just about every messy thing I could think of.

As always I started off with a clean, pre-shrunk 12-inch square of canvas purchased from Jo-anns. I prepped the fabric with gesso and then a coat of pale pink acrylic paint. Out came the punchinella and gray paint mixed with modeling paste. The left over mixture was scraped around the edges of the canvas. I pulled any frayed pieces to give an even more frayed look. Next I added Pan Pastels and randomly. I used embossing ink and powder to give even more of a gritty texture. What is more messy than embossing powder? Glitter! Yes there is some of that too. I keep a bottle of Perfect Pearls mixed with water handy so I spritzed the entire surface.

Now Riley did the ultimate messy fling of paint on me. So I went in and tried to cover up turquoise paint. I started back at the beginning to clean up the spots. The final messy product was Color Bazaar powder.
The challenge this month was for the design team to create a layout containing "ONE," which would be anything from the word down to one of a variety of items on your layout such as my fun take. Now I did use the same photo in my New Year's card so forgive me if you see it two days in a row.

Now one (haha! keeping with the "One" theme!) would think that it would be quick and easy to stick with just one of something. I spent quite a bit of time on this layout. I had already taken the photo in between holiday shows for the musical theater company. But as always I tend to scrap without thinking of a photo because I am too lazy to print an image up to start with. I used to always start with a photo but that led to too many printed images and I always felt like I was behind. So anyhow...back to the process. I decided that I needed to stash bust. Christmas was going to be the theme. I must have had this paper since I started scrapbooking five years ago.

I ruffled the red grossgrain ribbon myself using the ruffler foot on the sewing machine. That is probably the one item that took the most work to be done but was the quickest thing for me to do. It was all about placement of items and lonely stash that needed to go. I really did have a lot of fun with this. I suggest you give the "ONE" concept a try. I know it may be difficult with other themes but I know you have to have Christmas paper and lots of photos.

Here is a run-down of everything I used:

<h6 class="uiStreamMessage" data-ft="{"type":1}">
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009371469007231667noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1310078778320011075.post-33835222075875282362011-12-15T22:20:00.000-08:002011-12-15T22:20:38.186-08:00Custom Fit Sewing AdventureFor the past few weeks, I have been consumed with costume design and construction. I have a friend who led me to tutu.com last year. I had purchased their smallest pattern for a bodice (size 6 slim) and instructions to construct a ballet tutu over a year ago. Well I lost the pattern. So I bought a size 7 slim this time around plus the smallest panty bottom.

Riley wanted to participate in the school talent show at the local mall. I wanted her to do a Tahitian dance solo...no luck. She wanted to sing so she chose "Let It Snow" with her vocal teacher. I decided to make her a tutu. She selected the color and the fabrics. Tulle with glitter....seriously I had glitter clogging my sewing machine. It needs to be taken in for cleaning.

Anyhow the panty pattern was a size 8. I think it fit me. So I had to cut a pair of underwear and wing it. I winged a lot of the process. The pattern was REALLY big. I admit, Riley is small. Maybe in tutu.com's terms, she could have been been a size 4 or smaller. So I had to draft my own pattern pieces for just about everything. I didn't know the technical names for the pieces. I didn't have an example. Their expensive instruction booklet (it's on spiral bound, one sided photo copies) has really no photos or diagrams. Very few I should say. But I am proud to say I constructed this professional level tutu. If Riley would have chosen a stiffer net (of course without glitter), this would have been a "pancake" style ballet tutu which I hooped and used steel spiral boning as well.

After this, I just may be ready to take on any project.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009371469007231667noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1310078778320011075.post-78369739598048921502011-12-01T21:12:00.001-08:002011-12-01T21:23:22.683-08:00True XOXO December ChallengeIt's the 1st of the month again! Check out the True XoXo blog challenge. The design team was challenged to create a project using this photo as inspiration.

Now this isn't an image I would normally scrapbook so I was indeed challenged. I knew I liked the black and white pattern. Okay I have to admit that I knew I had similar paper in my stash. HA! The rest of the vintage type images/colors...well I initially thought of Webster's Pages. But then I looked down at my feet and stared at a class kit I got at Scrapbook Expo in Anaheim from a Prima class. It was perfect since all the papers were under 6" and great for stash busting.

The flowers and doily were sprayed with Glimmer Mist. The letters are wood from Pink Paislee. The small "embrace" block is from Melody Ross' GCD Studio line and came from one of the prize packs I won from the Spring contests they had earlier this year. This layout is a whole lot of layers and nothing complicated. No cutting because I really had cut it all in the class. I still don't know how I feel about the contrast of vintage and black and white....Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009371469007231667noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1310078778320011075.post-43983841288304060532011-11-14T13:14:00.001-08:002011-11-14T20:53:04.360-08:00Fall Burlap Wreath Tutorial

I've seen various burlap wreaths on Pinterest so I decided to make one myself. It helped that I had all of the supplies already on hand. A few weeks ago, I had purchased many yards of colored burlap from Scrap in San Francisco. It's a city run organization where people donate items and they sell most of the stuff pretty cheap. This project cost me no more than $2 but takes some patience to complete. I forgot to take a photo of the wreath in good light so sorry for the crappy photo.

Materials:
Glue gun
Glue sticks
Scissors
Burlap (I used four colors total)
Dies (flower and leaves) and diecutter or hand cut
Buttons

The wreath comes from Dollar Tree. I also had this on hand for several months since I was supposed to teach the Spring chipboard floral wreath but the class fell through. It is a 9-inch wreath.

Plug in glue gun now to warm up. I started with cutting the natural colored burlap into 4" squares. Warning: the fibers get everywhere. My glue gun is covered in them. It was all over my clothes and on my sewing machine on the floor. It stuck to my cutting mat too. (Somehow my phone's camera turned on to black and white.) You'll need a lot of squares.

Next I placed hot glue on one corner and folded the square into a triangle.

Then put a bit more glue onto the same corner and fold over one point to the center.

Flip over the fabric and place yet again another dot of glue than fold over other corner. One thing I found is that the glue stayed hotter than usual on the burlap than on other materials. Yes I did burn my fingers several times on hot glue. You may have to hold onto the glued fabric because it doesn't seem to want to stay shut (again...felt like it wanted to stay hot). It will look like a folded origami square.

Once glue is cold and the piece stays shut, you'll want to slide your finger into it and puff it up into a bubble.

Now glue whatever way you wish onto the wreath with the bubble side up. Vary how you glue each onto the wreath so it's not all uniform to look ruffle-like. I started with the center of the wreath and completed the entire circle. Then I glued the inside row of the wreath and finished with the outside.

I used Sizzix's Tim Holtz Tattered Flower die to cut the flowers. The leaves were also Sizzix cut on the Big Shot. And I cut off the plastic shanks vintage buttons I also found at Scrap.
I've discussed how much time the costumes in general took away from scrapbooking. Here is your chance to see my creations in action. Michael made the headpieces and I did the costumes. Glad it's over. We started The Lion King but it looks like I don't have to do much this time around since we will just buy them premade.
And that one time was really a partial dress up because I had to for work. Since Riley wanted to be a pirate (we got her costume at Disneyland), she wanted me to be a pirate too. I picked a few patterns. I was going to mix them up with pieces from each. In the end, I settled for one with a coat. I didn't initially like the neck piece but it worked. I had scraps left over so it was a done deal. This actually cost far less than it would have if I would have bought a premade costume and of course of better quality. I even had people tell me that it looked like "real clothes" haha sorry but it is. What they meant was that it wasn't costume quality.
Too bad you can't see my boots. I love these boots. They have a top that folds over and these cute stud/hook things up the back. When I bought these, I did think they would be cute as pirate boots. The bad part is I love one of the studs in the back. Who knows where it went. I did get them from Nordstrom during the pre-sale so they weren't as expensive as you see now. But I'm wondering if they can get me a new stud for a replacement.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009371469007231667noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1310078778320011075.post-13627857575258314852011-11-02T11:54:00.000-07:002011-11-02T11:54:46.701-07:00Zombie Halloween Hybrid Layout

I don't know if the photo freaks you out but it sure does scare me...and I was there when Riley created this look for the haunted house at her dance school. I constructed most of the layout digitally. The photo is printed on photo paper to give it some extra texture. One thing I love about digital is how I can make so much of a 12" page but I does lack true texture. So that's when my over-embellishing fingers get to work. I pulled out Making Memories Halloween stash. The rubons and metal tags (which are so hard to see in the photo) are probably 2 years old. The flowers with skeleton heads are most likely a year old from Scrapbuck at the Scrapbook Expo. The digital kit comes from www.katehadfielddesigns.com and www.the-lilypad.com.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009371469007231667noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1310078778320011075.post-31494461686154839502011-11-02T00:28:00.000-07:002011-11-02T00:28:16.991-07:00Back in blackThe True XOXO challenge is back for the month of November and the theme is BLACK. I initially was going to go with a monochromatic black look but felt something needed color. I toyed around with an idea of a title with every letter a different color...but I was too lazy to diecut letters and have a ton of colored cardstock scrap.

I started off with a piece of Making Memories flocked cardstock. I don't know how long ago this line was created but I'd say at least 2 years old. I picked it up when we went to the MM warehouse sale two April's ago. You can see the original paper as the photo mat. Riley's guitar is really a bunch of blue, pink and purple but with the editing....looks a lot more grey. I brushed the entire sheet of cardstock with black PanPastels. I selected Prima black flowers from the 1 pound pillar containers and some black bling. Oh and I see I added some Making Memories stickers to it as well.

For my pop of color, I decided to use a rectangle of the original paper. I roughed up the edges of the paper (as well as the base sheet). I placed the rectangle in the spot where it matched the pattern in the background. Next I diecut glitter DCWV cardstock and wrote in the rest of my title in silver ink. Pretty simple but sure was a lot of time pondering what to do with the challenge. I think I will try more monochromatic layouts. I'm thinking BRIGHT this time around.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009371469007231667noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1310078778320011075.post-83186299602872795182011-10-31T00:00:00.000-07:002011-10-31T00:00:01.702-07:00Halloween MadnessHappy Halloween! We have a busy day ahead of us. We have costume parades galore and Riley wants me to dress up too. I've been prepping for this day for months. We've had a haunted house for Riley's musical theater company, school carnival, dance school carnival. Have I mentioned that I had arranged for a donation of 140 pumpkins for the Tahitian dance group to sell at the carnival? Not only did we have to drive 90 miles to pick them up but we had to store them for two weeks. This year I even made my own costume. You won't see the photos yet. But you can see what Riley looked like after she watched a YouTube tutorial and did her own zombie makeup for the Haunted House.
In Shimelle's class, we had a prompt which instructed us to pick a few background sheets, a few small patterns, a few large ones. And then we were supposed to hack everything into rectangles and squares. Just random cuts. The thinking behind it makes sense....tons of layouts from a few cut papers. Now I have major issues with this. For one, I have a hard enough time using scraps. But to think I cut scraps just to make layouts with no specific purpose is almost like scratching a blackboard with my nails. This layout...I didn't do too well with. I mean there are two cut blocks from different manufacturers. It's all right but it sure isn't something I am happy with. I think I need a whole lot more in the embellishment department.

Seriously it was a good lesson for me to learn that this type of scrapbooking is NOT and I repeat...is NOT for me. But this next page wasn't so horrible and I used up a lot of tags and stickers. I think it may need more but I need to just walk away and leave it at that. A lesson learned. I am happier with this layout than the previous. So maybe it's just that I don't like the thought of cutting something valuable in my mind...a precious resource (yes just a 12" piece of cardstock) for no reason whatsoever. But when given a true scrap....I can well...make lemonade.
It's stash busting time without scrap clutter. I used two sheets of cardstock (one patterned and one solid) for this layout and cut a circle from an existing piece of scrap. The strips of paper are from Echo Park. It's one of the sheets with strips of different patterns. The embellishments are random epoxy stickers from Creative Imaginations that I get from Scrapbuck.com at the scrapbook show.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03009371469007231667noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1310078778320011075.post-13276839452065671582011-10-22T23:29:00.000-07:002011-10-22T23:29:37.604-07:00Zipper layout

I recently went to Scrap in San Francisco. I thought it would be in a really bad part of town but it wasn't where I had thought (where I'd get shot or mugged). It's in an industrial area near my dad's work. Anyhow, I dragged my mom along for protection because I was just unsure. A teacher friend told me I would be fine as long as I parked along the fence...see she scared me! The store receives donations from individuals and companies. A lot of the stuff is really old. If you like to upcycle, it could be your type of place. I like the Oakland reuse store a whole lot better but that is in a bad area and well, I have to pay bridge toll to get home. Anyhow, I guess Scrap gives a lot of stuff away for free. I quite a bit of colored burlap and wool and it was only $6 for my total purchase. I left with an entire paper grocery bag filled with zippers.

We are learning to make masks similar to The Lion King musical right now and I so happened to stumble upon plaster gauze. I had no clue what it was but I looked at it. Then two nights later, Michael asks me if I know what this stuff is. Well no but I saw it at the store I think. So I went back to Scrap and bought all they had because it sells for $25 per pound in some cases. I paid $1 per roll. Not bad and I left with another bag of zippers. I tried to make zipper flowers. I wasn't so thrilled with my first try but I'll have to try again with probably a thousand of them now.

Haha I had a long story just to get to my layout. I added zippers to this to add some softness and rough edges. I had more zipper on the layout but I made the photo too big so I had to pull off the existing embellishment and cover it up with Prima flowers. How can I be in stash busting mode (two year old Fancy Pants papers) and bring car loads of really cheap stuff?

Oh by the way, here's a peek into the making of our Lion King Musical adult Simba mask. Riley is a whole lot smaller than the guy who will wear this. We don't know who will be cast until Wednesday. And actually this is more of a mold we are making. We are hoping to make two casts from the plaster gauze I bought. Then we have lionesses, Pumba, Scar, probably Zazu, hyhenas, and the crazy baboon. Haha I can't remember his name right now.
